Stay at Carlsten Fortress

Carlsten’s sturdy walls wrap their safe arms around Donjonen and Kommendantshuset. In these 18th & 19th century buildings you will stay in our charming rooms, just like thousands of soldiers have done over the years.

The Donjon. The soldiers at Carlsten initially lived in the large halls up by the tower. In the 1840s, the new barracks in the southern Donjon were completed. There was room for 600 soldiers and officers who lived in hammocks attached to the roof. There were cannons in the windows facing the sea to defend the southern harbor entrance. The donjon was renovated to its current state in 2003.

The Commandant’s House was built in brick in 1775 for the commandant and the noble prisoners. The house also housed Carlsten’s only female prisoner, Metta Charlotta Fock, who was accused of murdering her children and husband. Carlsten’s last commandant still lives upstairs in the house.

The rooms at Carlstens Soldathotell range from single rooms to eight-bed rooms in Kommendanthuset and Donjonen. All parties that book with us get a private room. All rooms are unique and have their own shower and toilet (some of the rooms have their own shower and toilet just outside the room). Check-in usually takes place after lunchtime or by appointment. Check-out at 11:00 on the day of departure. You can read more about the history of the hotel here.
