No 90 Kleist in summer 2026.

Ticket release February 27th

About No 90 Kleist
The performance is based on the CD “Marstrandsfånge No 90 Kleist” and is about the prisoners and soldiers at Carlsten’s fortress on Marstrand during the 17th – 19th century. Being sentenced to labor at Marstrand was the heaviest punishment handed out in Sweden – if you were sentenced as a prisoner, you hardly got out with your life intact. The personal fates of prisoners are portrayed in music and plays, as well as the Battle of Carlsten when the Danes came to visit in 1719.

During the performance, you will get to know characters such as Commander Danchwardt, Martian prisoner no 90 Kleist, the executioner Beckius, the only female prisoner Metta Fock and the half-confused Danish/Norwegian Tordenskiold. The three-act performance is served with a light summer menu.

Location
Carlsten Fortress was built in 1658 by Charles X to defend the Swedish fleet in the constantly ice-free harbor. Well, it wasn’t Karl X who carried the heavy stone, but the prisoners who were then locked up inside the thick walls. Marstrand itself was founded in the 13th century by King Hakon IV and has been a militarily strategic location throughout history. It has also been important for trade and fishing – not least during the herring seasons. It is also worth mentioning that Marstrand was a “free port” with, among other things, freedom of religion and where, paradoxically, criminals could find refuge. Carlsten Fortress ceased to be a prison in 1854 but continued to have some military significance for a few more years.
