Carlsten Fortress is located on the island of Marstrand, about 45 kilometers northwest of Gothenburg. The first way to get to Koön is by car, bus or boat. Since car traffic is prohibited on Marstrandsön, you can take the passenger ferry from Koön to Marstrandsön by car or bus. Koön is located 100-150 meters east of Marstrand and the ferry crossing only takes a couple of minutes.

Driving a car
Directions from Gothenburg: Take the E6 towards Oslo. At Kungälv (approx. 20 km) take road 168 (signposted Marstrand) and follow this (approx. 25 km) to Marstrand-Koön.
Parking. At the entrance to Marstrand-Koön there are signs for several different parking lots. The principle is that the closer to the ferry terminal, the more expensive the fee. During the winter months, most parking lots are free – see instructions on site.
Travel by bus
Bus No. 302 runs daily from the Nils Ericson Terminal at Gothenburg Central Station. The bus’s final stop is at Arvidsvik on Koön, just 30 meters from the ferry terminal. For schedules, fares, and more, visit www.vasttrafik.se or call customer service at 0771-41 43 00.
Ferry Koön – Marstrandsön
The passenger ferry between Koön and Marstrand runs around the clock. During the day, it departs every 15 minutes, and at night, it departs every half hour on demand. Tickets can be purchased from the ticket machines at the kiosk/food stand next to the ferry terminal or inside the kiosk. You only need to show your ticket when traveling from Koön to Marstrand, as the return trip from Marstrandsön to Koön is included in the ticket price. Travel time: about 2 minutes.

How to get from the ferry to Carlsten Fortress on foot
Once you have crossed to the island by ferry, the easiest way is to turn right along the quay. After about 200 meters you turn left onto Kungsgatan. Then just follow this straight up until you reach the fortress. The last part of Kungsgatan is a steep hill. When you have climbed it, you are at point 1 on the map next door. Turn right and follow the road until you reach a gate marked 23 (no. 3 on the map). Inside this is the entrance to the brick house (no. 4).
